Aid Project Portugal
Already since 1948, the Portuguese organisation Casa Mãe do Gradil near Lisbon offers a safe shelter for young girls with a difficult familial background. Alcoholism, sexual or physical abuse or neglect: most of the occupants have made traumatic experiences which often leads to low self-esteem or disorientation when it comes to their own future.
Through a coaching programme, the project “Atreve-te” (“Dare to”) supports these girls in their personal, social and professional development. While the first step is to create awareness of their own abilities, interests, wishes or objectives, the second step is to give the participants access to a corresponding school or academic education.
In 2017, the LR Global Kids Fund supports the project with EUR 8,400, thereby providing funds to furnish the rooms in which the coaching takes place as well as for schooling – from school fees through to school materials. The girls receive intensive guidance in order to ensure fewer absences at school as well as the successful completion of their training. These successes not only improve their chances in the labour market but also contribute to strengthening their personality.
