Knowledge is a Human Right: International Right to Know Day

On 28 September 2025, the world celebrates International Right to Know Day – a day that underscores the vital importance of free access to information for a just, enlightened, and democratic society.

What may seem a given to many is still far from reality in numerous parts of the world: access to education, reliable information, and transparent governance remains out of reach for countless people. This day of action sends a clear message – advocating for enlightenment, participation, and the right to know what affects us all.

This day was established in 2002 at the "Freedom of Information" conference in Sofia, Bulgaria. Since then, organisations worldwide have used 28 September to raise awareness about information freedom through events, talks, and initiatives.

As a children’s aid organisation, we too stand behind the belief that knowledge is the key to development, self-determination, and future opportunities – especially for children. Only those with access to education and information can understand and shape the world.

Help make knowledge accessible to all – as a supporting member, you can make a difference.
